Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.

Crazy Credits: We know about 5 Crazy Credits. One of them reads:
The Oz characters that Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr and Margaret Hamilton play are not actually listed in the cast list at the end; only their Kansas counterparts are.

Goofs: We know about 83 goofs. Here comes one of them:
Continuity: When Dorothy walks over to the curtain where the wizard is, she leans down and picks up Toto who was tied to the curtain. When she picks him up hes already untied.

Trivia: There are 125 entries in the trivia list - like these:

The title role was written with W.C. Fields in mind. Producer Mervyn LeRoy wanted Ed Wynn, who turned down the role. MGM executive Arthur Freed wanted Fields, and offered him $75,000. Fields supposedly wanted $100,000. According to a letter from Fields agent (which he claimed was written by Fields) Fields turned down the role to devote his time to writing the script for You Cant Cheat an Honest Man (1939).

Ray Bolger was originally cast as the Tin Woodsman. However, he insisted that he would rather play the Scarecrow - his childhood idol, Fred Stone had originated that role on stage in 1902.

Buddy Ebsen had been cast as the Scarecrow, and now switched roles with Bolger. But the aluminum powder makeup for the Tin Woodsman was toxic and Ebsen apparently had an allergic reaction to it as well. He left the picture, but his voice can still be heard in “Off to see the Wizard”.

One of them reads:
The roadshow cut shows the title card at the intermission rather than the beginning, as on most prints.

Goofs: We know about 4 goofs. Here comes one of them:
Continuity: In the “Sorcerers Apprentice” sequence, as Mickey Mouse waves his hands in front of him to make the broom come to life, his sleeves spill over his hands. It then cuts to his shadow on the wall, where his hands are fully exposed.

Trivia: There are 43 entries in the trivia list - like these:

Igor Stravinsky, the composer of the “Rite of Spring” (who, until 1971, was the only one of the composers still living whose music was featured in the film) hated Leopold Stokowskis re-orchestration and re-organization of the piece (the original order of the sections was jumbled, and two of them were completely left out of the Disney version).

Disney digitally re-recorded the soundtrack for the 1982 re-release because the original Leopold Stokowski soundtrack from 1940 sounded dated and very limited in fidelity. But for the 1990 50th Anniversary release, Disney reverted to the original soundtrack from 1940, which they cleaned up as best as possible (although the limited fidelity could not be corrected) and this is the soundtrack the film has today.

The 2000 restoration was the first time the longer, so-called roadshow version of the film was seen after the initial release. This version contains much longer interstitials from Deems Taylor explaining what will be seen. The picture of these segments was easy to find and was cleaned up, since most of them were used in the 1990 restoration, but the soundtrack for the segments that had not been seen since the 1940s either could not be found or was in terrible shape. After much debate, actor Corey Burton was called in to dub all of Taylors speeches, including the “Sound Track” sequence halfway through the picture.

Director Frank Capra tested the film in different areas of the US with four different endings to determine which one to keep. In one, John Willoughby commits suicide. In another, Ann Mitchell persuades him not to leap from City Hall. Inspired by a letter signed “John Doe,” Capra filmed a fifth and final ending in which Mitchell talks some sense into Willoughby and then faints into his arms.

The tune that the main characters constantly play on their sweet potatoes is “Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee (An Actors Life for Me)” from Pinocchio (1940)

Frank Capras first choice for the role of Ann Mitchell was Ann Sheridan. However, she was vetoed by Warner Bros. in a contract dispute.

The cynical lone wolf Blaine comes into the possession of two valuable letters of transit. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in Casablanca, the sycophantic police Captain Renault does what he can to please him, including detaining Czech underground leader Victor Laszlo. Much to Ricks surprise, Lazslo arrives with Ilsa, Ricks one time love. Rick is very bitter towards Ilsa, who ran out on him in Paris, but when he learns she had good reason to, they plan to run off together again using the letters of transit. Well, that was their original plan….

Crazy Credits: We know about 2 Crazy Credits. One of them reads:
The series does not have an opening credits sequence. Instead, the lead actor credits play out over a scene. Now commonplace in sitcoms and drama series, this was considered a novelty in 1990 and sparked a debate over the future of opening credits in TV series.

Goofs: We know about 43 goofs. Here comes one of them:
Continuity: A knight on the chessboard disappears momentarily in the opening chess game.

Trivia: There are 93 entries in the trivia list - like these:

Studio publicity in 1941 claimed that Ronald Reagan and Ann Sheridan were scheduled to appear in this film, and Dennis Morgan is mentioned as the third lead. This was never the case, however, and the false story was planted, either by a studio publicist or a press agent for the three other actors, to keep their names in the press. Meanwhile George Raft was angling for the part with Jack L. Warner, but Hal B. Wallis had been assigned to search for what would be Humphrey Bogarts next starring role. He wrote to Warner that he had found the next movie for Bogart and the role was perfect for him. Nobody else was ever considered for the part.

The Allies invaded Casablanca in real life on 8 November 1942. As the film was not due for release until spring, studio executives suggested it be changed to incorporate the invasion. Warner Bros. chief Jack L. Warner objected, as he thought that an invasion was a subject worth a whole film, not just an epilogue, and that the main story of this film demanded a pre-invasion setting. Eventually he gave in, though, and producer Hal B. Wallis prepared to shoot an epilogue where Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains hear about the invasion. However, before Rains could travel to the studio for this, David O. Selznick (whose studio owned Bergmans contract) previewed the film and urged Warner to release it unaltered and as fast as possible. Warner agreed and the premiered in New York on November 26. It did not play in Los Angeles until its general release the following January, and hence competed against 1943 films for the Oscars.

Ingrid Bergmans contract was owned by producer David O. Selznick, and producer Hal B. Wallis sent the films writers, Philip G. Epstein and Julius J. Epstein, to persuade Selznick to loan her to Warner Bros. for the picture. After 20 minutes of describing the plot to Selznick, Julius gave up and said, “Oh, what the hell! Its a lot of shit like Algiers (1938)!” Selznick nodded and agreed to the loan.

Screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz wrote the balance of the screenplay for this film from a hospital bed recovering from illness.

The scene where Kane destroys Susans room after shes left him was done on the first take. Director/star Orson Welles hands were bleeding, and he is quoted as saying, “I really felt it.”

The camera looks up at Charles Foster Kane and his best friend Jedediah Leland and down at weaker characters like Susan Alexander Kane.
The tune that Peter Lorres character whistles is “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” from the “Peer Gynt” suite, by Edvard Grieg.

Peter Lorre was Jewish and fled Germany in fear of Nazi persecution shortly after the movies release. Fritz Lang, who was half Jewish, fled two years later.

Contrary to popular belief, Fritz Lang did not change the title from “The Murderers are Among Us” to “M” due to fear of persecution by the Nazis. He changed the title during filming, influenced by the scene where one of the criminals writes the letter on his hand. Lang thought “M” was a more interesting title.

Stunned by Pearl Harbor and a string of defeats, America needed a victory - badly. To that end, Colonel Jimmy Dolittle, a former air racer and stunt pilot, devises a plan for a daring raid on the heart of Japan itself. To do this, he must train army bomber pilots to to something no one ever dreamed possible - launch 16 fully load bombers from an aircraft carrier! This movie is remarkable in its accuracy and even uses film footage from the actual raid.

Crazy Credits: We know about 1 Crazy Credits.
Actual footage of the B-25 Mitchell bombers taking off from the U.S.S. Hornet was used in the film.

Scenes of Lt. Col. Dolittle briefing the B-25 crews on the USS Hornet show a hornets nest on a branch in the background on the overhead behind Dolittles left. Because the actual Hornet was sunk in 1942 soon after the raid, this must be subtle tribute to the original ship and its crew.
